On the surface, this makes a lot of sense.
HR teams deal with enormous amounts of text and data: performance reviews, internal feedback, employee surveys, compensation discussions, and workforce planning documents. AI tools like Claude can process this information quickly and surface insights.
But in my view, the moment HR data enters a general-purpose AI system, we need to pause and have a serious conversation.
Because HR data isn’t just operational data it’s some of the most sensitive data inside any company.
- Salary information
- Equity grants
- Performance reviews
- Promotion discussions
- Terminations
- Internal complaints
When tools like Claude enter this space, the benefits are obvious. But so are the risks.
Here are a few things I think leaders should be thinking about
If someone pastes marketing copy or product notes into an AI tool, the risk is relatively low.
HR data is very different.
From my perspective, once this kind of information leaves controlled HR systems, the stakes change significantly.
In my opinion, the real issue isn’t AI itself. It’s how people use it.

And that’s where things can start to get risky. Several companies have already experienced internal data leaks after employees used public AI tools without clear guidelines. In 2023, Samsung restricted employee use of ChatGPT after engineers accidentally shared confidential internal data with the system.
Before AI tools become deeply embedded in HR workflows, I think companies need clear answers to questions like:
These aren’t theoretical concerns. They’re core to HR compliance and employee trust. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) highlights the importance of governance, transparency, and risk management when deploying AI systems that process sensitive data.
My view is that the next phase of AI in HR will move toward purpose-built systems, not just general AI assistants.
McKinsey notes that the most impactful AI applications will be those integrated directly into enterprise workflows and data systems.
That means tools designed specifically for workforce data with:

At the end of the day, HR is fundamentally about trust. Employees trust companies with personal information about their careers, compensation, and workplace experiences. Companies trust HR teams to protect that information responsibly. AI can absolutely help HR teams move faster and make better decisions. But if the technology weakens trust around employee data, adoption will slow down quickly.
